Als gids neem ik u graag mee op wandelingen en fietstochten door de Stad Groningen en de Ommelanden.
De ScholtenExpeditie is een fietstocht langs de sporen van vader en zoon Scholten, zoals ze nu nog te vinden zijn in de Stad en de directe omgeving van de Stad.
Willem Albert Scholten werd in 1819 geboren. Eerst alleen, later samen met zijn vrouw Klaaszien en zijn zoon Johan, werd een klein bedrijf langzaam maar zeker uitgebouwd tot Nederlands eerste multinationale onderneming. Van pioniers tot hooggewaardeerde ondernemers, met innovatieve plannen, met fabrieken tot aan Rusland en met invloed op tal van maatschappelijke terreinen.
Om deze tycoon en zijn zoon beter te leren kennen neem ik u mee op een zoektocht naar hun sporen in de Stad en omgeving. Niet alleen om te laten zien welke sporen ze achter gelaten hebben maar ook om een beeld van hen te schetsen. Wat waren het voor ondernemers, waarin schuilde hun kracht, welke invloed hebben ze gehad op de economische en sociaal-culturele ontwikkeling van Groningen en het hele Noorden. Willem Albert en Jan Evert (Johan) Scholten, ze werden wel de hufter en de filantroop genoemd. Hoe komen ze aan deze bijnamen, waarin vulden ze elkaar aan, waarin verschilden ze van elkaar?
Geïnteresseerd in de geschiedenis van deze belangrijke ondernemersfamilie en hun invloed op de ontwikkeling van Noord-Nederland? Geef u dan op voor deze unieke fietstocht door de stad Groningen en omgeving. Op de fiets komen we op een tocht van ongeveer 20 kilometer langs allerlei plekken, objecten en huizen die met de Scholtens te maken hebben. De fietstocht duurt ongeveer vier a vijf uur.
