Een mooi moment voor initiatiefnemer Harry Bos en de bewoners van de Adelheidstraat: op vrijdag 22 maart plantte wijkwethouder Carine Bloemhoff het eerste plantje van GrunnGras, een reeks groene stoeptegels ontworpen door kunstenaar Martin Borchert. In de hele Adelheidstraat ‘piepen’ nu plantjes als tijm, stekelnootje, Waldsteinia en Finca tussen de stoeptegels door.
Het begon allemaal met de G100, in september 2018. Bewoners van de Oranjebuurt praatten met elkaar over plannen voor hun wijk. Bewoners wilden o.a. meer groen en een huiskamer voor de buurt. Twee maand later werd één van de wensen al vervuld: het lege pand van de Mitra werd omgetoverd tot een buurthuiskamer.
Hele straat
Nu nog meer groen. Initiatiefnemer Harry Bos wilde geveltuinen en boomspiegels in de straat. Hij nam hiervoor contact op met Laurens Stiekema van de gemeente Groningen. “Laurens zei: het zou nog mooier zijn als je het met de héle straat deed. Dus ben ik alle deuren langs gegaan om over het idee te praten. Iedereen wilde meedoen.”
Samenwerking
Ondertussen had Harry ook kunstenaar Martin Borchert ontmoet. Hij nodigde hem uit in de spiksplinternieuwe huiskamer om zijn GrunnGras te presenteren. Martin liep al een tijdje rond met zijn ideeën over groene stoeptegels en zocht een gelegenheid het uit te werken. Hij ging graag de samenwerking aan.
Gelukkig
Martin werd geïnspireerd door de aanleg van geveltuintjes en andere initiatieven die ervoor pleiten om tegels te vervangen voor groen. Meer groen is beter voor de afwatering van regenwater en gaat de opwarming van de stad tegen, ook wel ‘hittestress’ genoemd. “En van groen wordt je gewoon gelukkig”, zegt Martin lachend.
Gemeente bestraat óók
Hij vervolgt: “Ik dacht: deze initiatieven vragen van bewoners om hun tuin te ‘ontstraten’ maar als gemeente bestraat je óók meters stoep.” Hij wijst naar de stoeptegels rond de bomen in de straat. “Niemand komt hier. Deze ruimte wordt gewoon niet gebruikt.”
Oude stoeptegels
Hij liet een wegenbouwer een ‘kwart rond’ uit oude stoeptegels zagen. Door een stuk met deze tegels te bestraten ontstaat er ruimte voor groen. “En: we hergebruiken materiaal. Nog een ander voordeel is dat oude tegels makkelijker zagen.”
Zelf invloed
Harry: “Na Martins presentatie raakte iedereen enthousiast over GrunnGras. Nu leggen we groene stoeptegels aan in de hele straat, helemaal tot en met de Jumbo. Ik vind het fijn dat je op deze manier zelf invloed kunt uitoefenen op je omgeving. Ik geloof erg in burgerparticipatie.”
