Een door TU Delft ontwikkelde fiets met daarop een door de VU Amsterdam gecoachte fietser heeft afgelopen weekend de fietsrecordwedstrijden in Battle Mountain gewonnen. De fiets behaalde een gemiddelde snelheid van 132,26 kilometer per uur!
Elk jaar vindt in Nevada de World Human Powered Speed Challenge plaats. Studenten vanuit de hele wereld komen in de woestijn van Nevada samen. Zij brengen mee: een speciaal voor de gelegenheid ontwikkelde fiets en een fietser die de afgelopen maanden keihard getraind heeft. Op een acht kilometer lange kaarsrechte weg hebben de fietsers alle tijd en ruimte om op snelheid te komen. In de 200 meter die ze daarna afleggen, wordt hun gemiddelde snelheid gemeten. Wie het hardste fietst, wint.

En dit jaar was dat Rik Houwers, op de Velox IV. Hij behaalde een gemiddelde snelheid van 132,26 kilometer per uur en liet daarmee de concurrentie achter zich. 132,26 kilometer per uur rijden op een fiets is natuurlijk bijzonder indrukwekkend. Toch is het niet genoeg voor een wereldrecord. Dat zetten de TU Delft en VU Amsterdam vorig jaar eigenhandig neer. Het team stelde fietser Sebastiaan Bowier toen in staat om 133,78 kilometer per uur te rijden.
De Velox IV
Hoe kun je nu meer dan 130 kilometer per uur rijden op een fiets? Nou, daarvoor heb je een speciale fiets nodig. En dat is de Velox IV. De fiets heeft onder meer een aerodynamische kap en speciale banden met een extreem lage rolweerstand. Het frame en de kap zijn gemaakt van superlicht koolstofvezel.

Niet alleen Rik Houwers deed dit jaar namens de Nederlandse universiteiten een poging een wereldrecord neer te zetten. Voor het eerst stuurden de TU Delft en VU Amsterdam ook een vrouw op pad. Christien Veelenturf fietste 110,76 kilometer per uur. Daarmee werd ze derde in het klassement van de vrouwen.
De jaarlijks georganiseerde World Human Powered Speed Challenge is elke keer weer razendspannend. Een goeie fiets en een goeie rijder hebben, is namelijk niet genoeg. Er zijn veel meer (oncontroleerbare) factoren die een belangrijke rol spelen. Bijvoorbeeld de wind. Die bleek dit jaar een enorme spelbreker. De wind beperkte het aantal pogingen die de fietsers konden wagen om het record te breken, sterk.
