Bij ruw weer gaat de zeevonk naar rustiger dieper water. Zeevonk kan tot massale bloei komen: het zeewater ziet er overdag dan zalmroze uit.

De lichtende zee
De bloei van zeevonk is vooral bekend van de rustige wateren in de Duitse Bocht. Zeevonk is niet de enige soort die licht kan geven. Twee andere soorten pantserwieren, die niet zoals zeevonk dicht bij de kust leven, de lichtende kwal Pelagia perla en verschillende soorten bacteriën stralen soms licht uit. In het Nederlands wordt zeevonk daarom ook wel een zweephaardiertje genoemd. Zeevonk leeft onder meer van kleinere planktonplantjes en -diertjes en visseneitjes. Opgegeten algencellen kun je zelfs als groenige vlekjes zien wanneer je het onder een microscoop bekijkt.
