Laatst maakte ik – samen met een goede vriendin – een wandeling door de bergen. De zon schijnt, het uitzicht is prachtig we wandelen midden door de bossen met mooie woudreuzen. Het pad gaat tamelijk stijl omhoog. We praten niet veel, het wandelen is inspannend genoeg en het uitzicht maakt ook sprakeloos.
Er is de afgelopen dagen redelijk wat water gevallen – regen, sneeuw, hagel – en het regen en smeltwater loopt midden over het pad naar beneden. Al klimmend ontwijken we het water en blijven op de droge gedeelten van het pad lopen.
Af en toe staan we stil om op adem te komen, om met elkaar wat gedachtes te delen. Over hoe je kunt leren om te leven in het hier en nu, over loslaten, over dingen nemen zoals ze komen, over de kunst om ondanks al je ervaring met naïviteit en nieuwsgierigheid naar de wereld te blijven kijken. Mooie gedachtes, mooie levensvragen, mijmerend wandelen we verder omhoog.
Vanaf de andere kant, verder omhoog, nadert een tractor. Nog voordat de tractor ons heeft bereikt stopt ie en de boer stapt uit. Hij heeft een stok in zijn hand en loopt naar de kant van het bergpad om daar wat handelingen te verrichten. Inmiddels zijn we op die plek gearriveerd en snappen we wat hij doet: naast het bergpad ligt een klein miniscull slootje, inderdaad bedoelt om het overtollige regen- en smeltwater af te voeren. Alleen, het slootje zit op die plek verstopt waardoor het water de makkelijkste weg neemt, niet door de verstopte sloot, maar midden over het pad!
Het is een klusje van niets, misschien is hij er een minuut mee bezig, en dan stroomt het water weer waar het stromen moet, door het slootje!
We maken een kort praatje met de boer, we complimenteren hem met zijn actie: een schijnbaar onbeduidend karweitje, maar met belangrijke gevolgen. Water wat over het pad blijft stromen brengt altijd schade aan, zeker als er vannacht en morgennacht ook nog eens nachtvorst over heen zal gaan!
“Ach ja”, zegt de boer, “weet u wat het is: de mensen hebben tegenwoordig geen tijd meer. Ze kijken niet meer om zich heen, en als ze het wel doen dan denken ze, laat een ander het maar opknappen!”
Als we weer verder lopen praten we er nog even over door. We zijn onder de indruk over het gedrag van de boer: Wat een verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel, wat een eigenaarschap!
En . . . . wat zou er gebeurd zijn als we hem en zijn tractor niet waren tegen gekomen. Zou ons de verstopte greppel überhaupt zijn opgevallen? Een ding weet ik wel; hij heeft ons weer beter leren kijken!
